2024 marks a year of farewells in the K-pop world. Four girl groups have decided to disband, citing the end of their exclusive contracts or challenges in maintaining team activities. This recurring trend, often called the “7-year jinx,” refers to idol groups struggling to renew contracts or sustain activities as they approach their seventh anniversary.

Under the Fair Trade Commission’s standard policy, idols typically sign seven-year exclusive contracts with their agencies. As these contracts end, discussions about group continuity often lead to disbandment.

Nature Ends Activities After Six Years

Nature, formed in 2018, announced their disbandment on April 27, 2024. Their agency, n.CH Entertainment, shared the decision after discussions with the members about their futures.

The agency expressed regret to fans, stating, “We are deeply sorry to deliver this news to all the fans who have been waiting for Nature’s return.” They added that the decision was made after careful deliberation.

The group, known for their debut single Good Feeling, completed their journey after six years. Among the members, Sohee will stay with the agency to pursue individual projects, including music and acting. Sohee, who joined Nature in 2019, previously gained recognition through Superstar K and as part of project groups CIVA and IBI.

Fantagio explained that the decision was made after long discussions with the members. Elly, Say, Lua, Lina, and Lucy ended their contracts, while Choi Yoojung and Kim Doyeon chose to renew with Fantagio. The agency pledged continued support for their solo careers.

Fromis_9 to End Activities in December

Fromis_9, a group formed through the survival program Idol School in 2017, will conclude its activities on December 31, 2024. Pledis Entertainment announced the news in November, confirming that the group’s exclusive contracts would end.

The agency stated, “After extensive discussions, we reached a mutual decision to terminate the contracts.” To honor their fans, the group plans to release a fan song on December 23 and complete scheduled activities before disbanding.

Despite their achievements, Fromis_9 faced challenges due to their association with the vote manipulation scandal of Idol School. While the members were not directly involved, the controversy affected public perception.

Fromis_9’s discography includes hits like DM, #menow, and Supersonic, which showcased their evolving artistry.
