Princess Hwa-ri refused to stay silent. She stood in the palace courtyard, beating the drum over and over, demanding justice for her late aunt. She wanted her aunt’s husband to face punishment. The king, however, saw things differently. He reminded Hwa-ri that there was no solid evidence to convict him. The man was also a meritorious official, making it even harder to take action. The king believed that punishing him would only bring disgrace to the family. He urged Hwa-ri to let it go. But she refused. She wanted justice, no matter what.
That night, both Hwa-ri and the king mourned for their aunt. The palace felt heavy with grief. The next day, a storyteller gathered villagers and noblewomen, narrating a tale through story paintings. The story felt oddly familiar. It mirrored Aunt Hyun-jun’s life—a tragic love story where the husband was cruel and unfaithful. In the tale, the Jade Emperor blessed the wife, allowing her to be reborn. In her new life, she took revenge on her unfaithful husband. The story had a satisfying ending. The wife moved on and found love again.
A Game of Power and Betrayal
Meanwhile, the unfaithful husband sought pleasure elsewhere. He arrived at a brothel, hoping to spend the night with a young girl who played musical instruments. However, the brothel’s owner, Choi Hwan, had other plans. He proposed a gamble. The man had to bet his wealth and properties for a chance to be with the girl. Confident in his skills, he agreed. They played Sugoroku, a strategic board game. But Choi Hwan tricked him. Before the game started, he sent the young girl away and took her place himself. The stakes were high. If the man lost, Choi Hwan would claim everything he owned. In the end, Choi Hwan won, stripping him of his wealth and power.
The next day, Hwa-ri and Choi Hwan visited her aunt’s private residence. They arrived just in time to see the disgraced husband being thrown out. Hwa-ri felt a sense of relief. Justice had been served. She turned to Choi Hwan, thanking him for his help. In response, he surprised her with something unexpected.
A Proposal and a Confession
Choi Hwan took Hwa-ri on a flight in a stone-crafted plane, allowing her to see the world from above. He assured her of his sincerity. If they were to marry, he promised never to take concubines or have affairs. He even offered to write it down as proof. But Hwa-ri wasn’t convinced. To her, marriage shouldn’t be a gamble or a transaction. She was frustrated and walked away.
Later, she confided in Hwa-jin about something shocking—she had already spent the night with Choi Hwan. Hwa-jin was speechless. To test something, Hwa-ri brought Jang-won into the room while Hwa-jin was changing into her hanbok. She carefully observed his reaction. He seemed unaffected, which made things complicated. They picked out a dress for the wedding and later shared tea.
Choi Hwan, feeling left out, asked Hwa-ri why she never asked for his opinion on what she should wear. Before she could respond, a large bookshelf suddenly tilted, about to crash down. In a split second, Jang-won rushed forward and shielded Hwa-ri instead of Choi Hwan. This small moment hinted at something deeper—an unexpected love triangle was beginning to take shape.
