My Girlfriend Is the Man character posters

There’s a new drama coming to KBS2, and it’s not your usual love story. It’s called My Girlfriend Is a Real Man. The name already sounds strange, and the story is even stranger. Based on a webtoon, this one is all about romance, youth, confusion, and a wild twist that nobody saw coming.

Many viewers are already wondering: Is this just another gimmicky drama or something truly meaningful? With K-dramas increasingly experimenting with identity and self-discovery, this one might touch on themes that matter more than it seems at first glance. Whether you’re here for the wild plot or to see how it handles gender and romance, this is one to watch.

The plot is simple at first glance. Kim Ji-eun (played by Arin) is in love with Park Yoon-jae (played by Yoon San-ha). They’re dating. Everything seems fine. Then one day, Ji-eun wakes up… as a man. That’s it. No warning, no slow changes—just suddenly, she’s a guy.

Now, her boyfriend Yoon-jae is stuck trying to deal with it. He still loves Ji-eun, but now she looks completely different. What does that mean for their relationship? Is it over, or can love survive something this big? These are the questions the drama tries to explore.

New kind of youth romance? Or just chaos?

Viewers tired of cookie-cutter K-dramas may find this mix of genres refreshing. It borrows the lightness of romantic comedy while throwing in heavy identity themes that challenge its own tone. That makes it exciting—but also risky.

This drama calls itself a “healing romance of destiny,” but honestly, it seems more like a fantasy-style social experiment. It mixes daily life with something completely unrealistic, and then expects the characters to act like it’s normal. That’s not always a bad thing—fantasy can bring out interesting sides of people—but it has to be handled well. Whether this one pulls it off is still a big question.

The cast is packed with familiar young names. Yoon San-ha from ASTRO plays the boyfriend who tries to hold on to love even when everything changes. Arin from OH MY GIRL plays the girl who turns into a boy. Yoo Jung-hoo takes over the role of the male version of Ji-eun, now going by Kim Ji-hoon. And Chuu plays Kang Min-joo, a lively university student who likes Yoon-jae and is about to make things more complicated.

These four are the focus of the newly released “character posters.” The posters are bright, cute, and full of symbols. Each character gets their own color, background, and little phrase. The team clearly wants this to feel like something fresh, something different from typical dramas. Whether the story matches that tone is another thing.

What the posters tell us (and what they don’t)

Park Yoon-jae’s poster shows him with a yellow star and the quote, “I will love you no matter what trials come!” Sounds sweet, but also unrealistic. This is a teen boy suddenly dealing with a girlfriend who’s now a boyfriend. That’s not a small problem, and love doesn’t always fix everything.

Kim Ji-eun (before the transformation) is shown with a blue jelly bear and says, “You’ll love me no matter what I look like, right?” Again, nice in theory. But the drama will need to show how that plays out in real life, with real doubts and awkwardness.

Kim Ji-hoon, the male version of Ji-eun, says, “Will we be friends until I turn back into a woman?” That question is probably the heart of the story. Can someone accept a totally new version of the person they love? Or will they lose something important along the way?

Then there’s Kang Min-joo. She’s bright, bold, and ready to stir the pot. Her poster reads, “Love is something you win!” That line alone hints at how much trouble she’s about to cause.

The real challenge here: tone

The hardest part for My Girlfriend Is a Real Man won’t be the acting or the direction. It’ll be the tone. Is this a funny show about weird love? Or a serious take on identity, attraction, and growing up? Or is it just here to shock people and keep them watching?

The drama is directed by Yoo Kwan-mo, known for Police Class and Perfume. The writer, Lee Hae-na, is said to have a big imagination. That might work well here. Still, the success of this series depends on how grounded the characters feel, even when the story is totally out there.

Takeaways

The idea of a “gender-swap” romance isn’t new. But most dramas either go full comedy or avoid dealing with the real-life issues that come with it. This show seems to want to do both: stay light and fun, while also saying something deeper.

If you’re curious about how this drama might compare to others, think of Coffee Prince (2007), which also explored gender identity in unconventional ways. But unlike past dramas, My Girlfriend Is a Real Man isn’t hiding behind misunderstandings—it’s fully embracing the transformation, which makes it riskier but potentially more honest. That’s a hard balance to strike.

One thing to note: this is not a typical college romance. And that changes everything. With university life as a backdrop, the stakes feel more mature. These characters aren’t just playing at love—they’re confronting real-life questions about selfhood, physicality, and emotional attachment. It’s refreshing to see KBS stepping outside its usual comfort zone.

The characters are young adults. There’s college life, new feelings, old relationships, and a lot of confusion. It’s about people trying to hold on to love while everything around them changes.

From a viewer’s point of view, it’s worth asking: Will this be worth 12 hours of my life? If you’re the type who enjoys offbeat plots with emotional payoffs, or if you like seeing idols test their acting chops in roles that push boundaries, it’s likely a yes. Filming was done from September to December last year, and fans of the webtoon have been waiting to see how it all turns out.

Whether it will live up to the original or crash under its own weird setup, we’ll have to wait and see. But it’s definitely one of the stranger K-dramas airing this summer. At the very least, it’s different—and sometimes, that’s enough to get people watching.
