Will Joseon’s Worst Tyrant Become a Softie for Fusion Cuisine?
This drama is not your usual time-travel comedy. Bon Appetit, Your Majesty mixes food, history, and politics into something that’s funny on the surface but layered underneath. The story follows Yeon Ji-yeong, a modern French chef who suddenly ends up in Joseon, Korea.
One minute, she’s winning a big cooking competition in Paris. Next, she’s stuck in the palace of a dangerous king. No explanation. No warning. Just her and her recipes.
Instead of opening her own restaurant, she’s now making royal fusion food for a man who’s feared by his entire country. King Lee Heon, played by Lee Chae-Min, is no joke. His rule is strict & reputation is terrifying.
His taste buds are sharp enough to notice weather changes in his food. Yet, somehow, this “ghost woman’s” cooking wins him over. And that’s where the trouble begins.
Lee Heon isn’t just picky. He’s a king with absolute power. And yet, he lets Ji-yeong stay just because he likes her food.
That alone says a lot. Maybe it’s an obsession. Maybe it’s a soft spot, or maybe it’s both. Either way, things at the palace start to shift.
Power, Politics, and Jealousy: The Palace Isn’t Just About Food
But the drama doesn’t stop at food and flirting. The palace is full of power games. Kang Mok-ju, played by actress Kang Ha-Na, the king’s concubine, isn’t happy about the new guest.
She’s not just beautiful and talented & she’s also ambitious. She’s worked hard to get the king’s attention, and she’s not letting go of it without a fight. She knows how the palace works—and she’s playing to win.
Prince Je Seon adds more tension. He’s Lee Heon’s political rival, and he’s dangerous. He’s been hiding as a wanderer since his father died.
But make no mistake—he’s waiting for a chance to take back the throne. And he’ll do anything to get it. That includes removing anyone who gets in the way. Even Ji-yeong.
There’s humor here. But it’s not all light. This drama plays with real history in a way that feels both bold and risky. The original novel was based on Yeonsan-gun, one of Korea’s most hated kings.
He was known for cruelty, paranoia, and violence. Some viewers aren’t thrilled about turning that into a romantic comedy. And it’s hard to blame them.
